My washing machine started making a low volume whining noise when the agitator is moving, but it doesn't seem to be agitating as well as it used to. Does this sound like a belt issue or a transmission issue?

If you will post a model number so we can see what kind of machine you have someone should be able to help you.
If this is a direct drive Whirlpool then the first place to check is the agitator dogs.

thank you for the reply, model number TAWS850PQ0 type 111
I meant to put it in my first post but obviously missed it. If it is the dogs, can you point me in the right direction to where I can get directions on how to disassemble/replace them? This will be my first time repairing a washing machine.. car/trucks no problem, appliances I'm a fish out of water

Ok, you have a direct drive Whirlpool which does not have a belt, which is good news. I am assuming that it spins ok, so the first place we want to look is the dogs. The dogs are plastic cams that make the agitator work, and they have small ridges on them which wear out or break over time. Here is a link to a video that will show you how to replace them. It is very easy, just pull the agitator which then comes apart. YouTube - Broken Whirlpool/Kenmore Washing Machine Agitator FixLet us know how it works out or if you need more info.

Well great, nice going and you saved about $100+ from a service call.
Thanks for the update.

I should have done that, it is a whirlpool Estate, model number TAWS800JQ1. I did remove the agitator assembly so I could replace the dogs, but when everything is removed, I plugged the machine and turned it on to see if anything was moving , shouldn't the pole be moving? it was still making the noise, but no movement
