came home, put a cup of water in the MW....

water heated fine, but when I closed the door, it sounded like it came back on...

opened the door.... fan stopped.... mw turned off

closed the door mw sounded like it came back on... control panel showed that it was NOT running... no countdown... just the time... turntable was NOT spinning, no lights inside... just the whirring sound...

no "error codes" or anything

opened the door.... sound stopped felt inside on right side in the back and it was VERY warm...

I had an errand to run so I left the door open...

Came home, wife had heated herself something... heated fine... door was shut... no "whirring sound"

where it was very warm LAST time, it was almost HOT to the touch... and there was a distinct smell of melting plastic.

control panel was dark (no time, nothing)... no response to the touch panel either.

unplugged it... and there it sits...

I have NOT pulled it apart yet...

question is... would this likely be something repairable... or is it probably junk... melting plastic smell and all...

This sounds like one of your door switches was going out and cause your fuse to go bad. Check your fuse and if it checks good, try to figure out which switch is bad. The videos in the links below will show you how to test the fuse and the door switches.
