Good advice but I've been around voltage a lot as I was chief of maint. for a lrge optical co. ( not glasses but prisms or windows for US Army Tanks or corner cubes for surveying. Biggest jolt was -10,000 RF and not much current(that will get you) Went straight through my right hand and right side of my body and as my right knee was up against the framework (ground) it exited in two places out my knee cap. Looked like I had been bitten by a snake. Hardly hurt though. I only touched the heating element and it has male/female plugins so not much danger there. Gonna pull the plug on that reefer tomorrow morning after transfering the food and will try the start up in about 30 hours. Wish me luck but I have a bad feeling on that one. Thanks Hank

By the way, I think you guys do one heck of a job for the people in need but I know you have to bite your tongue for the people that are not mechanical minded and don't know one part from another. Great job~~~~~Hank

I've got one last question . When I start this frig up after ther 24~~~48 hour wait to try and clear the obstruction mybe, should you do just one start or two or more starts and let it run about two or three minutes between starts. Don't know if you are open today but wanted to try today at 2 pm. Thanks Hank

I would just plug it in once and see if the obstruction clears. Don't let your hopes get all built up on this working: I have only seen about a 20%-30% success rate with this.

Concerning the communication with non-mechanical "clients": my goal is to come to a point to be able to understand, from a layman's description of a problem, what the cause is likely to be; AND (more importantly) explain, in plain language, either how to further test and diagnose it, or how to fix it in the most economical way possible.

We really appreciate your input; and can always learn new things, no matter how much we already know.

I have already plugged it in but don't know the results yet as it hasn't had time to cool. I tried plugging it in about five times as I figured that start surge was needed. I'm not keeping my hopes up though and the only quote so far is $450 . You never cease to learn if you try and the search engines of the internet is a wonderful place to go. Now I know a hummingbird's wings beat at 200 times a second . Will let you know the results. Hank

Good morning~~~~~~Well I let it sit for 30 hours unplugged until 4p.m. Sunday aft. I then started it up about 5 times in sucession figuring the compressor surge was what was needed if there was a blockage? Let it run all night and checked it this morning 9 am (PST) and instead of about half the coil being iced up , only the top coil had a little icy frost on it. The freezer had a temp of 42 degrees and the frig. half was about 51 degrees. I'm gonna hold off on anything until I hear from you and see what you think now. This temp was taked from the shelves in each section only. Thanks Hank

If the dome of the compressor is not getting hot, you have a leak. I still think it's a restriction, and it sounds like you're going to need a professional come in and repair it. I would call around and get quotes.

O.K. will check the compressor dome and see. What if it is getting hot and what do you consider overly warm or hot. (untouchable with hand? ) Hank

Too hot to touch is overly hot. If the compressor gets too hot, it will cut off on thermal overload. In normal opersation, the dome is hot, but not too hot to touch. If it is cool, that means that it's not working, i.e. low or empty of refrigerant.

The difference between this and a restriction is that if the system is still sealed (no leaks), the compressor will be sucking the system into a vacuum (if the restriction is in the evaporator.

Sorry I'm just getting back to you but I've been in the process of taking this think apart door wise and wheel wise to get it thru a small sliding door. They built houses without considering large appliances. No, the compressor was just warm to the touch. You could just wrap your handws around it and keep them there, I'll put the doors back on tomorrow morning and start it up and call a pro in here and see what he says. I like the frig but you can get aq brand new Whirlpool 25 cu ft. at Fry's for $599. That might be a smarter move ? I understand about the compressor being cool that it is not working. It's sorta like friction heating. When we used to pick up more ice on the leading edges of the Boeing jets, you just increaded your airspeed and friction burned it off. Will let you know what happens. Hank
