My Pre 2001 counter flush cooktop front large surface coiled burner element with y support blew out today (quite the light show and noise and burned through a pan). It immediately started cooling. We cut the power to the kitchen and loosened the tip up piece and removed the burner. Then we popped the two metal clamps holding the ceramic block and then disconnected the two wires located inside the ceramic block, freeing the element and secured the two wires inside electrical tape. The ringed / coiled element (5 or 6 rings depending on where you look) actually burned itself into two pieces.
I cannot locate a model number or part number.
The four knobs and power indicator light is located on a metal box in the left front. The power indicator light is still lit, even though the offending element is removed. I am assuming it is on because the unit is "smart enough" to figure out one of the burners has a problem, but "dumb enough" not to know that offending item has been removed.
I need another part but do not know where to look for it.

I am assuming that the element is controlled from an infinite switch. If this is the case odds are that a set of contacts in the switch welded together when the element blew. This may help find the model number Model Number Locator |

So where is this "infinite switch"? and how do I find it?
The photo does nothing to help because the stove looks nothing like that.

It is the control that controls that element.
I am assuming that this unit has a knob for each element.
If it is all controlled from the control board then the problem is probably the control board but that is just a guess.
Without a model number I cannot say where it is. |

I do not know, hopefully someone else with this info will jump in.
I checked the GE site but could not find an install sheet.

Should we just replace the surface element first and see if that works?[/COLOR]
I guess it depends on how fast you want it fixed. If you are not in a rush then I would do just the element and see what happens.
Without a wiring diagram I cannot be 100% sure that the infinite switch is toast. |
