My old hotpoint started to make a RUSTY GRATING noise on the wash cycles about a month ago. Now the agitator RISES up on the spidle during the wash cycle, makes some noise and doesnt turn once it rises. Is the spindle coupling bad or does this model have the DOGS OR TABS? When I take the agitator off--nothing was holding it ON, There was some broken-up small rubber pieces in the inner-most end. Is that the broken-down coupling?? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks

Get all the rubber out the agitator. Get some rubber cement. Apply rubber cement to the spline. Get a huge metal pipe and compress the agitator block back down into the agitator or buy another agitator. Get a friend and 2 by 4. Use a piece of pipe put the agitator on the ground and get someone to guide the spline in straight then use the 2 by 4 to compress the spline in by using equal pressure or if you weigh 345 like I do you can do it by yerself; and do not bust the agitator. Nothing to it. LOL:D

the spline-coupling rubber was stuck up in the splines of the agitator, now it came out . Do I just apply the cement into the agitator cap splines-allow to dry in place, then apply more cementto the rubber surface and slide that back down onto the shaft until it seats---let dry --then try a wash cycle?? Your 1st advice seemed sound until you mentioned the 2x4 and the large pipe. Also how do you cement the spline to the agitator THEN take it and lay on ground with pipe and board?? Also when you put LOL -- someones jerking my chain!!!

First you gotta remove all of the old spline from the agitator without destroying the agitator. I use a steel rod with a hook on it to fish out the rubber. I have another steel rod with a point on it to jam between the rubber and the agitator so I can hook it and yank it out. One that is done I have a piec of 1 inch all thread rod that I position the new spline on. I paint the spline with rubber cement. I shove the spine into the agitator as far as I can then I set it on the floor. I have a big old bit off of a Jack hammer. It is about 3 feet long and has a point on it. I put my weight on it and shove the new spline onto the agitator. I would then charge you $10 including part. Unfortunately I closed my appliance parts store and retired. :D SublimeMasterJW attached the following image(s):

You want the tranny to be free of any traces of the old drive spline. You want to install the new spline in the agitator first. Incidently you need only to remove the anti wobble and 3 inner tub bolts to get the inner tub out. Then you remove the boot (it has 1 big and a little clamp) Then 6 screws hold the tranny onto the frame. This washer is WORTH the effort to repair it. Nothing on the market today comes close to this beauty as far as performance. Good luck with your repair. :D
