The other when running a wash cycle I noticed that the cold water trickles into my machine and the hot water gushes. I unplugged the unit, unscrewed the hoses from the back of the machine and then reconnected with the cold on the hot intake and hot on the cold intake. Now the hot water trickles in and the cold water gushes. Why? How can I get both to flow at the same force?

More than likely, you have a clogged screen, either on the valve itself, or on the hose. Remove the screens and clean.
