Good Grief! What a simple solution to a problem I had been working on for hours. I kept looking for some magic tabs to remove the parts. Thanks to you it took all of 10 seconds.

Bobbert

Glad you got it, as someone on another Forum once said, if its hard you are probably not doing it right.

I would not put any lubricant on anything, just put it back together, be judicious with the fabric softener and good luck in the future. Let us know if you need anything at all.

Thanks also for the update.

Once the parts come for my washer (LSR8233EQ0) I am replacing the dogs on the uper part of the agitator. The instructions say to put grease on the thrust washer if there isn't any. Is my washer that much different from the one you advise on in this thread?
Thanks,
Don Mitchell

Your washer is a direct drive Whirlpool, the same as the others so my advice is unchanged. In fact, I really don't understand the instructions since a thrust washer is associated with a Maytag.

Just put it back together and you should be fine!

I have the same problem, and will try the hot water before jerking the heck outa the two parts. But, can anyone tell me if the process will work for WP Ultimate Care 2 Model # LSQ8543JQ0 ?? I would prefer not to break it.

I see the same deal with the little white tabs holding the dog ear piece on, where they look almost melted. Don't see how I could 'pinch' them or anything to facilitate the separation of upper & lower pieces!!

Thank you so very much.

Yours is the same, take out the bolt and it pulls up and then apart, or apart and then up.

Thanks to ALL who make this forum work. The Hot Water soaking trick worked! Soaked both pieces in big tub of HOT water for 10 minutes, and bingo, came right apart with little effort. I've been trying to figure this out for MONTHS!! You guys/gals are great, and my next parts order will come from this site.:)

Mine are melted down as well! I watched videos on here and the cam just popped right out. I had no idea what was wrong until I looked closely and saw the tabs melted to the cam.

(great fourm!)

Hi, and thank you so very much. I got it!

Before hearing from you I tried oiling it; repeatedly banging the blasted thing (as someone else online had suggested); almost pulled my guts out trying to pull it while standing on it; tried to find something to sit inside the hole for leverage in hopes of just pressing down forcing the top off; practically beat it to death with a mallet; and attempted countless bodily contortions to achieve leverage that, had someone been filming, would surely have made it to the finals on Funniest Home Videos.

In the end, it took a combination of (1) soaking in extremely hot water for a few minutes which I think not only loosened the gunk but probably also expanded the plastic and (2) realizing that what was on top of the four little divets (little snap tips) on the cam (?? is that what they call the clear/whitish part that the dogs sit in??) was not fabric softener build-up but rather the tiny tips had somehow been melted down, effectively sealing the two parts together. Still can't imagine how the little tips could have been melded together like they were -- it looked almost like a heat gun or chemical of some type had caused it.

At any rate, were it not for your suggestion to try hot water, I suspect I'd still be trying (I'm part Scottish, so I don't give up easily). Have to admit though, I almost got to the point that I was going to return the agitator kit and simply order a whole new agitator assembly. Even if I had done that, it still would have cost me significantly less than paying a repair person.

By the way, should I have applied grease to any part of the agitator assembly? I thought I read somewhere about greasing some part, but I'm not sure exactly what and wouldn't have known what type of grease to use.

Well, now it's time to start the laundry, so I'll leave you with another thank you, and God bless you for coming to my rescue.

Hey folks,

I'm here to tell you that I scoured various forums and the hot water was the answer. My history is: I could see the problem with my washer was that the top part of the agitator was spinning freely. A quick perusal of britishjames.com showed me that the dogs were likely worn out. I was able to take the agitator out of the machine and verified the problem but, like some others, I was baffled by the fact that the agitator wouldn't pull apart.

Honestly I about gave myself a hernia standing on the bottom part and tugging. I was truly afraid to break something (including but not limited to myself).

Your forum saved my health insurance from a claim. After soaking for as long as it takes to drink a can of beer (I made myself drink it to give the right amount of time for a soak), I pulled and "pop" off it came! Thank you so much!
