no it was not there when i took the backing off. it is wet around the line as it enters the groomet. Do you think that could be the problem?

It's a good probability,

It may not solve the problem, but it may reduce the moisture level,

Being on the outside of the unit, you can use any kind of sealer.

Manufacturing uses "rope caulk", for ease of manufacture,but as I said, you can use any type of sealer.

Seal the whole area, very well and tight.
