ok, so the washing machine one day all of a sudden won't spin when in the spin cycle. I do hear a slight hum or buzz when it is is the spin cyle. Also I can spin the inner tub by hand. Any ideas/help is greatly appreciated...I have the front of the machine off now and was going to take a look at the drive block first..but then what/how to tell if that is bad...?

Will the washer fill and agitate ? Have you drained the water out of the tub ? A couple if basic checks at the drive asembly : Dismount the pump from the motor (2 spring clips hold pump to motor), check pump for clogs or frozen(seized shaft) With pump dismounted from motor and motor dismounted from gearcase, put timer in final drain/spin cycle and start cycle does motor run or hums? (BE careful, this is a live voltage test and you could get hurt) If the motor runs when dismounted , suspect: Malfunctioning brake / clutch assembly Locked up gearcase. If motor still only hums in spin suspect: Timer (if washer will fill and agitate) Motor (if washer does not run in wash or spin) Please contact us after checks are made, and if there is more information.

ok, just removed the tub and it is now NOT agitating, pumping or high spin..uhg. I can see the drive block/shaft attempting to turn and sometimes it does but then stops.

With the motor detached from the gearcase, use the plastic coupler for leverage and turn it in both directions a few (5 or 6 )revolutions and feel for a locked up gear or drag noise in the gearcase. If it has a noise or you can't turn it easily , this will indicate a mechanical failure in the gearcase. A very good possibility, with what you have just mentioned.

ok, I finally got a chance to remove the motor...the motor/transmission coupler does rotate but is kind of stiff, but not stuck...clutch/brake?
What's next to check/diagnose, as in, how do I know if I need to replace the basket drive/brake assembly, clutch assembly or both?

So when the clutch is removed it spins fine, until I re-install it and after a few turns it engages the brake and is hard to turn, I can see the brake pads are against the housing wall, so this is why it's hard to turn...so what is the issue/part to replace?

Irishgond, Everything you mentioned and described, indicate, the gearcase and motor are fine. The clutch / brake assembly, work similar to a cars clutch or brake system. If the pads are worn, springs weak, etc. they work , but not properly,and anything can happen. I read both of those a while ago before your reply, thank you....My question is...I don't know which is causing the issue...the clutch, the brakes or both. I guess I can try grinding down the pads a bit to start with?
