Hi i have a GE side by side fridg. Just started tonight you can really here the freezer fan running. When you open either door it stops like it should. I havent tore it apart yet to see it. It almost sounds like there is something vibrating inside. maybe bad motor bearings? I see fans cost around $50 but i want to make sure thats the problem. Any ideas?

The motherboard in the back (AP4436216) is normally the problem for this.
I would pull the back freezer panel and check for bad bearings in the evaporator motor.
If ok, I would listen to the fan motor. Bad bearings show up as a screachy noise. A bad motherboard will show up as a sort of intermittent/ changing power to the motor. This is due to a random shifting of the frequency of the voltage going to the motor.
If this is what it sounds like, replace the motherboard.

It does sound just like your describing. The fan seems to speed up then slow down and then it will almost make no noise. But the noise is a constant vibrating. cant hardly stand it

ok i just unplugged the fridg and plugged it back in and now the fan is not running. is this normal or did i finnish it off. Im just concerend about the food untill i get the mother board orderd.

The motherboard may just have failed if the compressor is running, but not the evaporatoe motor. You can allways check the motor voltage per the article in the sticky above, (GSS & PSS) model refrigerators.

Ok...the fridge came back on after i unplugged it about 10min later. When it came back on it still had the vibrating noise. Now get this....this afternoon i came in from out side and was like wow its quiet now sounding like it should. Is the evaporator motor supposed to shut off evey now and then? at this time i hear nothing. Usually everything shuts down when you open either door. I see the motherboard is $123 i just want to make sure it will fix it. Thanks

GE used cheap drivers in the motherboard that fail if any of the loads draw more than usual current, so to be safe, I would replace both the motherboard and the evaporator fan motor. Yes, this is a common failure for the motherboard to act up like this.

ok, i finally had time to pull the cover off in the freezer to see the evap motor. While it was vibrating i shook the plastic housing around and made it quite again. So after putting it back together and 3hrs later still quite as normal. Im puzzeld.....it sounds like the fan blades are hitting the edge?? any thoughts?

You shifted the evaporator motor on it's rubber mounts and will probably be ok now.
