Our oven door is locked and we can't get it unlocked. We had a major power failure and now the door is locked. It has an F5 error which will not clear

Hi jmiller, F5 error code stands for a problem with the door latch. To unlock the door: First, disconnect the power to the range (either unplug it or turn the power off at the circuit breaker). Pull the range out and remove the back panel. Your range has a door latch in the front and a door latch solenoid (with latch switches) in the back. There is a thin metal rod that connects the two. When the board sends a signal to the solenoid to lock the door, the solenoid turns the rod which locks the latch. With the back panel off, you should now see both the solenoid and the rod. You can now manually release the latch by turning the rod (probably clockwise). You should now be able to open the door. Put everything back the way it was and with the door open turn the power back on. Press and hold any key on the board for one minute. This should release the error code. Press CANCEL and give it a few minutes to see if the code comes back. If it doesn't, you can start baking (by the way, I like oatmeal cookies ;) ). If it does come back, you'll need to test the latch switches and the solenoid. Here is a tech sheet from Whirlpool that will tell you how to test the latch switches (See F5 under FAILURE/ERROR CODES). If you need any parts for this model, use the following link (make sure to get the complete model number off the oven, now that the door is open): Whirlpool models starting with RF386PXELet us know how it goes...
