tub is full of water, don't know what cycle the problem started, but agitator will not turn at all and won't drain. I hear the timer running, and there is a soft hum from lower end of washer. I tried resetting the washer water level, turned timer through several cycles. If this is a direct drive? I'm thinking transmission or a "drive" motor?

Open it up and make sure nothing is obstructing or jammed in the pump. If that is ok, I would take off the pump and motor, leave the motor connected and see if it will run in spin mode. If not, the motor is likely the problem. If the transmission will not turn easily, the problem can be the transmission or brake tube assembly. See if this service manual is close enough to your model to help you get into it. https://secured.whirlpoo.../$FILE/L-56_4314124A.pdf
