A few years ago we had a problem with our unit (it shut down in mid-wash cycle and the control panel was unresponsive). The short version is that I corresponded with an online tech who tentatively diagnosed the problem but recently my email inbox was deleted. I believe that he said the control panel needed to be replaced. We then had a repair tech look at it but the machine was working fine. So he confirmed the online diagnosis and concurred with the online advice that there were 2 parts that normally are replaced at the same time for this issue. Soon thereafter we moved to work-provided housing but have now returned and want to repair and use the machine. Can someone advise me on what that other part might be that should be replaced when the digital control panel quits working?

I have replaced a ton of those controlboards when I worked for Maytag years ago, but only a few of the touch pads. The only reason, I replaced the touch pads is sometimes, every button did not work. In your original post you said the unit went down and then you had a tech come in and it was running.
Was it totally dead the first time?
What if anything did you do to get it running again?
Could be you have a loose/bad connection somewhere.
You may want to try the following cleaning.
As with any unit that is totally dead it is best to check the power at the receptacle first.
Then power in the machine just in case you have a bad power cord.
Also this unit has a transformer (Item 28 in Section 4) so I would check that it's output voltages are OK.
Connector Cleaning / Checking
Unplug the unit
Open it up
Remove the ribbon cable from the keypad to the control board at the control board.
Clean the edge connector.
If it is the type where there is not a connector just the insulation is removed, it can be cleaned with a pencil eraser. Do not use an ink eraser as it is too abrasive.
Check the tracks in the ribbon cable for hairline cracks. A magnifying glass helps here.
Would not hurt to clean the other connectors on the board. Use electronics contact cleaner or isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. Be gentle and do not reconnect till all the solvent evaporates.
Reconnect everything and give it a try. |

What if anything did you do to get it running again? Yes the first time it was totally dead as it is now. The odd thing was that we did nothing to get it going again. It just sat for a number of weeks until we decided to call the repair tech. When he started his diagnosis nothing was wrong and we used the machine for a while more before it stopped working again. I'm certain the receptacle is hot but the loose connection is a good thing to try. Thanks for the step by step instructions to give that a try.

I tried the cleaning. First just the ribbon cable. Then I plugged both cords back in. When I plugged in the dryer cord I heard a faint humming sound, which actually had been present before unplugging for the cleaning. When I plugged in the washer cord the washing machine came on in the agitation cycle. There was still no response from the control panel. I then pulled the panel and circuit board and cleaned the contacts on the board with a pencil eraser and my thumbnail. I inspected the board and don't see any obvious bad spots. Put it all back together and the washer runs in agitation and there's no response from the control panel. Still sounding like a problem with the circuit board?

The new circuit board came yesterday and I installed it this afternoon. No change in the machine's actions: washer runs in agitation and there is no response from the control panel. I don't think this should matter but do not have the water turned on yet to the machine. What next? Replace the touch pad? I assume I can't return the circuit board if I determine that mine is OK as it looks like might be the case?
