My washer makes a horrible grinding noise during agitation and seems to skip during the spin cycle. I'm not sure where to start & what to check first....

Remove the washer cabinet. Remove the pump and the motor and check the motor coupling.

Remove both hoses from the drain pump and check for a foreign object inside.

Here are the break down diagrams for the Roper washer Model RAX4232KQ0 (model is similar to yours).

I checked it this morning and it has now stopped agitating. It still spins but makes the same noise. I removed the pump and motor. The couplings are fine and there is nothing in the lines...I'm stumped!

Sounds like the gear case (aka transmission) gone bad.

- The part number for the gear case is AP3096209

Is there anything else it could be? I put it back together and it agitates again, but still grinds and clicks when spinning out the water. Thank you so much for all your help Gene!

Did you check the pump itself?

Run the washer on the spin cycle with the cabinet out to pinpoint the noise. Post your findings.

It sounds like it is something wrong with the agitator. I ran it on spin, it spins fine, but it makes a grating sound. I cant tell where the clicking sound is coming from though. I even tried manually turning the agitator and it makes the same noise. I removed the agitator and cant see any visible problems...is it possible that it could be stripped?

While the agitator removed, check if the splines on the shaft are worn. Turn the transmission shaft to see if the same noise will come out. In both cases the transmission (aka gear case) is bad and has to be replaced.

If there is nothing wrong then probably the splines inside the agitator are worn and the agitator has to be replaced to solve the problem.

- The part number for the agitator is AP3114127
