Dryer will not heat during timed drying; will heat for short time while auto drying

I have a Frigidair Gas dryer, model FDGB23RGS1. It is a very basic model and I believe I have two problems but dont know if they are somehow related.
1) If I set the timer dial to a minute setting, the dryer goes on and I hear the ignitor click on but the burner never seems to ignite and basically the clothes just tumble with no heat. The timer also never counts down. So I think I have a bad timer...
2) When I set the timer dial to the Automatic Drying setting the ignitor fires and the dryer warms. However I dont believe the auto-dry feature is working properly because when the dryer stops the clothes are still wet and I am forced to run the cycle agian and sometimes a third time to dry the load.
Could be a timer...could be a controller? I dont know. I am an engineer by profession and have no problem taking things apart, as long as I know what I am looking to fix. Does anybody have any ideas for me?

The first thing I would do is replace the timer and check the exhaust line. Possible the gas valve coils could be bad too but this is going to be the second step. - The part number for the timer is AP2144876 Here are the break down diagrams for the Frigidaire dryer Model FDGB23RGS1Gene.

Gene,
I am going to order the timer and the coil kit.
With this particular dryer do I have to access everything from the rear or can I somehow gain access from the front of the unit? Also, am I correct in saying that there is no thermal fuse installed in the circuitry? I looked carfully at the breakdown diagrams and the wiring diagram and don't see one.

You were right - there is no thermal fuse in this dryer.
In order to access almost all parts you have to remove the front panel.

Ok, thats what I was afraid of...Since I am at work now and cant actually look at the thing I am assuming that there are screws or something holding on the front panel? I did a quick glance this morning before I came in and they weren't very apparent to me. Are they hidden screws, or is there some hidden clip system holding the thing in place?

Using a putty knife, push the clip (#7 on the break down diagram) on each corner on top of the front panel to release the top panel. Lift the top panel and remove the screw on each side of the front panel. Pull the front panel toward yourself and release it from the clips on the bottom. Gene.

there is a felt gasket around the drum to force air to be pulled from the heat source. if this seal is compromised the non heated air by passes the heat element and will cause it to turn on, however air is not removing heat from the element the element trips the over heat device and the heater turns off.

Gene and others.
Here is an update. I initially replaced the timer. This seemed to fix the problem, but last night the stupid thing stopped heating up again and needless to say I was disappointed. I pulled the igniter out and looked at it. It looked ok. I checked it for continuity. It was ok. I went to put it back in and dropped it and it broke into pieces.
Luckily, there is a appliance parts store nearby and I was able to get a replacement. I installed it as well as a new coil kit.
Everything seems to be working ok heat wise except on timed dry, where the timer doesn't count down. The burner goes on, the motor runs but the timer never moves from its initial setting. On auto dry everything works as it should. I don't get it. I looked at the wiring diagram and cant figure out why timed drying is not allowing the timer to run. If auto dry runs the timer, I know the thermostat and flame sensors and safety thermostat are good.
I'm kind of at a loss. Can someone look at the wiring and see if they can figure something out that I just dont see.
