My Kenmore washer does not seem to agitate properly. It will occasionally go around, but has a vibration to it and does not pull the clothing down. I don't know if something is loose or stripped. I can spin it freely, but don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
If this is something I can fix great, but I need to know what is wrong first and how to do it. If I need to call a repair tech, is it a costly item and would it just be better to buy new as it is about 8 years old.

leothedog The agitator in your washer consists of two parts: the base and the top part. My question is: the top part of the agitator moves freely in both directions while the base is not moving or the top part moves only clockwise freely? If it moves freely in both directions then the cam dogs have to be replaced. You should use the agitator repair kit, part number AP3138838. On the break down diagram bellow you can see the sequence of the agitator part: Good luck. Gene.

I am looking for some instructions on how to replace the kit mentioned in the previous posts. I have ordered it and the grease, but I have no clue where to even start to take this apart. Can anyone offer suggestions or lead me to a place to find a book on this? I have searched the internet and am finding very little for this model #. Sears parts site says it is not a valid model #. Go figure.

Gene,
I seem to be having the same problem but wanted to make sure. When I press down on the agitator assembly when it is in the agitating cycle, it seems to grab as it should however, will not rotate 360 degrees unless I spin it by hand. Does this sound like it could be the dogs also?
