Dryer stops mid cycle in regular and timed cycles. goes about 20 minutes, then stops. Detect a slight electrical smell after it stops. It heats and drum turns easily. Does not initially re-start when I turn the switchbut clicks a little won't re-start. After its cooled down, it will start again, but stops mid cycle again.

any help would be greatly appreciated. thanks.

Sounds very much like your motor is failing. The motor heats up, the overload protection kicks in shutting it off, and after it cools down it will run again.
