 We are trying to troubleshooting my dryer and when taking the back cover off, we found this resistor. What is the purpose of this? Should I leave it alone or try to take it off? My friend said if might have to do with dropping the voltage... is this correct and why? Thanks so much!!!

They put that resister there to save the windings in the start portion of the motor in case that cheap ass asiatic start switch fails. Seen it.:D
