Our over the range microwave just started making a very loud noise.

It sounds like a grunt per say. It is not a grinding noise.

The turntable spins, but very slow.

Any advice on what it could be, or how much ?

Kenmore model # 665.6061200
8 years old

I am asking cause i am out of work, and on tight budget.

A bad or dying transformer will make a deep growling-like noise.

I just took the face plate off (Number/start control) to look inside.

I then turned it on, and the noise is coming from the top right corner of this model.

According to the tech sheet that was with it, it looks and sounds like the " Magnetron Thermostat.

Is this an expensive fix?

Could I fix it ?

How much would the part possibly cost ?

It looks like thermostats are between $4 and $15, at least for the ones I could find according to your model number. If the Mag t'stat blows, there's no power to the magnetron at all. This is accompanied by no noise. Is it possible for you to do a video recording of this noise and post it? Different noises are generally associated with certain symptoms. We're interested in helping you solve your problem without needlessly having to throw a bunch of parts at it.

I am going to try and get a sound bite for ya. I do believe it is the Magnetron, and of course replace the thermostat while i'm at it.


Is this a tough fix ?

The failing transformer will cause a deep "growling" noise; the failure of the magnetron will sound more like a sizzle.
