 My washer just started squealing when it gets to the spin cycle. It sounds likes it's trying to move but can't (if that makes any sense). After the squeal it will stop doing anything anywhere from 10 to 30 minutes then it will usually start back up with the squeal but then spin out. The last time this happened (last night), it never started back up but I manually moved the dial to spin cycle and it completed. What should I check, I already have the front off but could sure use some guidance.

Thanks so much!

It sounds like your transmission is binding, and that the motor is overheating trying to spin and the overheat protection shuts it down until it cools off.

Try to run it with the front cover off and see what is happening.

Let us know what you find out.

sidfink43, you were right on the money. I ran it with the cover off and I really couldn't tell anything. I kept hoping it might be a solenoid or something I could easily take care of my self but no such luck. According to the repair man that came out it was a problem with the transmission. After he quoted us a rate we've decided to get a new washer, there wasn't a whole lot of difference in the price. I really appreciate you taking the time to try and help me.:)

Well, sorry that happened. These machines should have a life of 10 to 20 years, but sometimes it just does not work out that way.

Good luck with your new washer, (good decision I think) and thanks for updting us.
