I am attempting to replace the belt on the spinner/pulley for my washer because my washer stopped spinning. I opened the washer and put a new belt on the spinner but once it tries to spin, the belt simply slips off. Does anyone know why this keeps happening?

Well, the obvious area is did you get the right belt? Normally the new belts are too tight and not too loose.
I assume you have checked that out. You can look where the belt attaches and I think on this model you have a belt adjustment mechanism. See if that will not help you.
The only other thing I can think of is that something has come out of alignment, in which case you have a major repair on your hands.

With the belt removed, you can check to see that there is free movement in both directions by spinning the large pulley by hand. Also check for in and out movement by pushing/pulling. There should be none. Set the machine in a spin cycle and see if the motor is running. You should find a fairly complete diagnostic chart inside the console.

Those Maytag Neptune belts can be challenging to get back on! There is not an adjustment even though the motor will 'pivot' slightly but in the wrong direction so it gets tighter. You also have to watch your fingers! If your machine has been getting louder in spin cycle then you need to replace your Neptune bearings. See http://www.neptunebearing.com for replacement bearings and the 12002022 seal kit. You can also rent a special Neptune Bearing tool kit which includes a DVD to help you change your bearings and save $750.00. If you bother the Maytag dude he will want about $900 to replace your whole outer tub unless he has his own Neptune bearing tool kit and bearings from The Maytag Neptune Bearing Tool Kit created for Maytag technicians.. Lastly, if you have a MAH4000 then you have the faulty door latch wax motor and I recommend replacing it before she blows the Q6 triac and R11 resistor on your machine control board. I bought a belt 12001788 for my mah5500aww and it was very short...like 2" shorter than the old one. The old one was very tight, I was only replacing it since it was 9 years old.
Is there another belt to order?

-Mike The 12001788 belt kit is what is called out for the mah5500aww neptune. It should also include (2) of the plastic motor bushings as well. I would replace those as well. Those belts are very tight putting on... Make sure the motor is pivoted as far as it will go where the large fender washer hits the stop. In addition, since your mah5500aww has the faulty 12002535 door latch wax motor I would recommend replacing that as well if it has not been replaced yet. It will eventually short out which will damage the machine control board. See Neptune Help Song for the video that explains the issue. Let us know when you get the new belt on...

I have a wax motor on order to replace as it is failing.
Do these new belts stretch much? I just don't see this belt going on without stretching at least 1".

This is 2024, much later for this thread. It took 24 years for my mah4400 Neptune washer (new 2000) to start squealing. I ordered new bearings and a genuine OEM belt. The bearings were a bit of a challenge to remove and replace. I had to fabricate a bearing tool using a big bolt, washers, and cutting a lawnmower blade up. I thought that would be the worst of it, but the last step arrived and the new belt was about 2 inches too small. The tension adjustment was already at the smallest setting. I tried over and over, but no way - impossible. I bought some CRV belt conditioner from an auto parts store and treated the old belt. It was better, the new bearings are smooth as silk. But a full load of towels still squealed. Useable but not ideal. In desperation I used a measuring tool to match the old belt - the groove spacing etc. I guessed a little and found a belt online that looked almost identical to my old belt. Measuring the length was almost impossible, so I ordered 2 belts 54" and 55". My thought was that I had lots of adjustment for a bigger belt. The belts came a few days ago. The 54" was still to short, but the 55" fit perfectly no adjustment needed. My old Neptune is working better than ever. When a cycle is done, it spins so fast that the laundry is fluffy and nearly dry. Maybe it did that many years ago, but its been a long time. You can add a small wire jumper that tricks the sensor to think the door is always locked. OK for me since small children never have access to my washer.
