Every time the spin cycle ends or the lid is opened, the tub comes to a screeching halt. This action is so violent that it causes the machine to move. This doesn't seem right to me. Any ideas?

Has this just come up or is it becoming progressively worse?

Not sure. I didn't notice until I did. At first I thought it was a safety feature when I would open the lid during a spin cycle, but it does the same at the end of a spin cycle.

It is a safety feature when the motor stops, either when opening the lid or the end of a spin cycle, the brake is suppose to stop the tub. This is meant to prevent injury if someone were to perhaps reach in while the tub was spinning. In my experience with the older style Maytag's I've seen what you describe. I don't think it's anything to worry about now unless this behavior changes drastically.
