Washer stopped suddenly in the rinse cycle. Heard a "pop" and now only hum when washer control is engaged.

what is wrong?

Does the humming sound as if its coming from the bottom or the top in the control panel?
If the bottom near the motor, I suspect the pop was your Start capacitor going bad. You can find it attached to the motor.
Whirlpool WP8572720 Capacitor - AppliancePartsPros.com
It should be intact, not bulging or have any of the contents (dielectric fluid) leaking out. If it is intact check its capacitance as it should read 324 to 389 MFD (micro-farads) or µF.
Thats my first thought!
