Hi all, thanks for your help ahead of time. The poorly designed door strike on my washer broke a few weeks ago and I purchased x2 replacements so when it breaks again, repair will be a simple matter. Well this repair is turning out to be not so simple. The latch will not accept the new strike. I've confirmed that the part is correct. I've read that this is not an uncommon failure, and part of the strike often breaks off inside the latch. While it's possible that I'm simply missing the little piece, I've scoured the inside of that latch with all manner of light and tool and nothing appears to be lodged in there. I've also manually manipulated the latch's mechanism, and indeed there doesn't seem to be any room for the strike to mate with it. The small movable part that serves as the locking mechanism seems to be unable to move up far enough to accept the strike.

I apologize if there are already threads dealing with this conundrum exactly; I used the forum's search features and did not find anything. Seems like this would be a common scenario, what with Whirlpool really phoning it in on this part.

Did you order this part "door strike"?

Whirlpool WP8540221 Door Strike - AppliancePartsPros.com

Maybe your latch is damaged?

Whirlpool WPW10253483 Door Latch Assembly - AppliancePartsPros.com

There are videos for both parts.

I wound up replacing the Latch Assembly as well and that did the job. This was a last resort because I was not convinced by the available evidence that the latch was actually causing a problem and it was sufficiently costly that I wanted to put in my due diligence first. Apparently the strike and the latch assembly failed simultaneously or one following shortly after the other. Hope this helps.
