We have a washer that will fill, spin (albeit it very wildly) and drain, but doesn't agitate. Actually, it does the same thing in the rinse cycle. Only the actual spin cycle works.

We haven't been able to get the agitator components out of the agitator, so we're not sure if it's worn dogs (or even if our agitator has those), but doubtful that is the problem.

The agitation cycle is definitely louder than normal, and during the spin cycle (prior to the agitation quitting), the tub is definitely off balance and flails around the outer tub crazily.

Underneath, when my husband turns the transmission wheel (?) one way, nothing in the washer moves, when he turns the opposite way, the entire inner tub assembly rotates.

The lower agitator will also rotate freely in both directions when we manually turn it. The upper half will not. The splines engaging the shaft all appear to be in good shape.

Any clues as to what could be the problem. We're thinking it's either the gearcase or motor coupler, but are there ways to troubleshoot those?

Thank you for your reply! We actually contacted Maytag and the transmission is covered under warranty for 10 years (we've had it for 9). Again, I appreciate your time in replying. Hopefully that is the problem! :)
