Hi -
It appears that the rear bearings are burned out on my Whirlpool Duet front loading washing machine. I want to try to replace them.
However, the rattling drum of the washer has damaged the front edge of the outer tub of the washer -- grinding the lip off the tub so that about half an inch of the outer tub has been ground away all around the opening.
Looking at this, it looks like I could just replace the bearings, sand down the damaged lip of the tub, and put the old outer tub back in. It does not look like it needs to be water tight or anything like that.
In this situation, do I need to replace the outer tub? Or can I just replace the bearings and seal, and put the damaged outer tub back in?
THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!
David

This is exactly what mine has. Yesterday smoke was coming from the INSIDE of the washer and it appears to be from the plastic outer tub whose lip is being chiselled down, leaving bits plastic shavings in the boot and among the clothes. This is too big a job for me, so is this something worth paying to fix or is it pricey enough that a new one may be in my future? I'm hoping that this will bump this tread up too and help the original poster.

I called Whirlpool and it looks like the part alone is $580. Then looked up a video on installing it and I would bet the labor is about an additional $200. Thoughts?
