Hello Jim, The unit has a bad coil or a bad safety valve. I always try the cheaper first. The coil kit Part number: AP3094251
includes both coils. This usually takes care of it since the gas valves don't fail that often. In case this doesn't fix it, the gas valve Part number: AP5617602
comes with the coils pre-installed. It isn't as easy to install as just the coils, but if necessary, it is still entirely a "do-able" job. The instructions I gave above is standard for the Kenmore you have also.
