Rod, sounded like he had adequate water level, he had something else at fault. This particular dishwashwer pauses the pump momentarily to switch from lower wash arm to upper arm through the use of the check ball and the force of water pressure in the system. And since it is long gone, not really of any use since.
I agree the use of cleaners is a must nowadays, Dishwasher magic is the best cleaner to clean up a dishwasher, using minimal ammounts of detergent that is needed based upon how dirty the dishes are, rinse agents, and hot enough water in the inlet.

Problem is with ur timer. Your model stops quickly, ball valve moves and When motor starts again (1 second later) water gets pushed to top rack.
To check this without replacing timer you : when the wash motor is running, You very very quickly open and close the Dw door. This will move ball valve and send water to the top spare arm. You can tell by the difference in sound. Sou like higher water pressure. If water goes to top, then replace timer. If not, then you main motor is shot and has lost power to pump water.
