Place it on the curb. Put a sign on it "For Sale: $75". Someone will come along and steal it.

You can also try calling a local repair shop. If the fridge is not too old they might pick it up for free.

If you put it on the curb make sure to remove the door. You do not want a kid getting trapped inside.
Some charities now pick up scrap as a way of making money.
Give it to a relative who gets on your nerves. Easy way to end a bad relationship.

In my neighborhood I just put anything metal out by the garbage, there is a guy who cruises the back lanes with his truck and picks up all metal items.

Ditto on the curb and removing doors. Around here, the meth-heads will scavenge it up within about one hour. They'll take things the garbage men won't like old non-OPD LP tanks.

If you have an HVAC buddy with a freon evac. you may be able to get him to recover the gas and tag it, which would then make it legal to dump.
