My Maytag Performa washer has been a big disappointment. The latest issue is it make a very loud (like a gun shot) noise in between cycles. It doesn't do is all the time, but most of the time. Any ideas as to what may be causing?

Actually, no. because the main way we diagnose noises like that is to take off the front and listen to where it is coming from.

That is what I suggest you do, and here is a service manual which may help. Pay attention to the suspension and brake areas.
